Did You Know?
๐ต Madd (ู ูุฏู) literally means "to stretch." When a letter carries a Fatha (โู) and is followed by Alef (ุง), you hold the "a" sound for exactly 2 beats โ no more, no less.
๐ The word ููุงูู (qฤla = "he said") appears over 500 times in the Quran โ making Madd al-Alef one of the most frequently applied Tajweed rules you will ever encounter.
๐ In Arabic, vowel length changes meaning. ุจููู (bala) and ุจูุงูู (bฤla) are entirely different words โ separated by one Alef and one stretched heartbeat.
๐ฏ Madd al-Alef is called Madd Tabee'i (ุงูู ูุฏู ุงูุทููุจููุนูู) โ the "Natural Madd." It is the foundation of all Madd rules. Every longer Madd type builds on top of this one.
โ Count with your hand: Tap your finger twice each time you say a Madd sound. This physical habit will protect your recitation accuracy for life.
Madd al-Alef โ Long "aa" Sound
Tap each word to hear the elongated vowel ๐
Remember: Madd al-Alef is called Tabee'i โ "natural" โ because it flows naturally in speech. If you shorten it, the word feels rushed and incomplete. If you stretch it too long (more than 2 counts), you've entered a different type of Madd. Aim for smooth and even: 1โฆ 2.
Madd al-Alef โ Recognition Table
Spot the Fatha + Alef pattern across different letters of the alphabet
| Letter | With Madd al-Alef | Sounds Like | Quranic Word | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ุจ | ุจูุง | baa | ุจูุงุทููู | falsehood |
| ู | ููุง | qaa | ููุงูู | he said |
| ู | ููุง | kaa | ููุงูู | he was / it was |
| ู | ููุง | naa | ููุงุฏูู | he called out |
| ู | ู ูุง | maa | ู ูุง | what / not |
| ุฌ | ุฌูุง | jaa | ุฌูุงุนููู | one who appoints |
| ุน | ุนูุง | 'aa | ุนูุงููู ูููู | all the worlds |
Alef Maqsura (ู): Sometimes Madd al-Alef appears at the end of a word as ู instead of ุง โ like in ููุงุฏูู and ููุฏูู. It still produces the same long "aa" sound. The rule is identical โ same duration, same feel.

๐ Recitation Challenge: Open Al-Fatiha on a Mushaf (or app). Before reciting, circle every Fatha + Alef you find. Then recite slowly, giving each one a full 2-count stretch. Aim to find and apply at least 5 Madd al-Alef sounds in just those 7 verses.
